The kitchen is the heart of the home, it’s where you make breakfast before everyone rushes out the door, where your kids spread homework all over the counter while you’re trying to cook dinner, and where friends somehow always end up when they stop by.When you remodel your kitchen, your are changing the way your family lives.
At Kaykar Custom Decks & Remodeling, we’ve been helping folks turn their outdated kitchens into spaces they actually want to spend time in. We’re veteran-owned, and honestly, we get what families around here need because we live here too. Here’s what we feel at the top 6 tips for your kitchen remodel in Northwest Indiana,
1. Start With a Vision, But Be Willing To Be Flexible
Think About How You Use Your Kitchen Space
Before anything gets demolished, really think about what you need. Not what looks good on HGTV. How do you actually use your kitchen right now? Are you someone who loves cooking from scratch and needs counter space for days? Do you have people over constantly and wish your kitchen opened up more? Maybe you’ve got young kids and everything needs to handle spills and chaos.
Collect Ideas That Speak to You
Start saving pictures. Make a Pinterest board or rip out pages from magazines and save then- whatever works. When you see a kitchen that makes you stop scrolling figure out what grabbed your eye. The lighting? That huge island? The cabinet color? The more specific you get about what appeals to you, the easier conversations become later.
Let Experience Guide You
Here’s the thing most people don’t expect. You’ve got to stay open to suggestions. When our crew comes out for that first free look at your space we may see things differently than you imagined (sorry about that). Sometimes what you’re picturing won’t work with where your plumbing sits or how your house was built. But usually we can figure out another way to get you what you’re after. We’ve done this enough times to know what actually works versus what sounds good in theory. We’re not going to steer you wrong because we want you loving your kitchen five years from now, not just the day we finish.
2. Prioritize Function Over Fashion
Look Past What's Trendy
That geometric tile everyone’s obsessed with right now looks amazing. Will you love it in five years though? Ten? Trends come and go fast. The kitchens where people stay happy long-term work well first, look good second. Pretty doesn’t matter if you’re cursing your layout every time you cook.
Make Sure Traffic Makes Sense
Really think about movement. Can two people be in there without constantly bumping elbows? If someone’s cooking at the stove can someone else grab stuff from the fridge without getting in the way? These practical questions matter more than you’d think.
Get Storage Right
This is huge. Deep drawers beat those cabinets where pots and pans stack up and you’ve got to pull everything out to reach what you need. Pull-out drawers and shelves mean you’re not on your knees on the cold floor digging through the back of cabinets. Think through where everything actually goes. Your mixer, your toaster, the kids’ lunch boxes, all those water bottles everyone insists on having. It all needs a home or your counters turn into permanent storage.
Remember the Work Triangle
There’s this classic design rule about arranging your sink, stove, and fridge in a triangle. It makes sense because it cuts down on how much you’re walking up and down while cooking! Some modern style open plan kitchens work better with zones instead of a strict triangle, but the concept holds – you want things positioned so making dinner doesn’t make you exhausted!
Get the Lighting Right
You need layers. Overall lighting so the whole room’s bright enough. Direct LED lighting over your work areas and sink so you can actually see what you’re chopping. Alos, maybe consider some softer lighting for when you’re not cooking and just want it to feel nice. Those under-cabinet lights aren’t just decorative by the way, they make everything safer when you’re working with knives or reading recipes.
3. Set a Budget (and Try to Stick to It)
Know What Things Actually Cost
Kitchen remodels run the whole spectrum. You can refresh things with new counters and paint. Or you can gut everything and start from scratch. Around here, you’ve got to be honest with yourself about money from day one. Otherwise you fall in love with stuff you can’t afford and it’s just heartbreaking.
Do some homework first. Custom cabinets cost way more than stock ones from Home Depot. Stone countertops aren’t cheap. Moving plumbing or electrical gets expensive real fast. Knowing this stuff helps you make smarter choices instead of getting sticker shock halfway through planning.
Financing Can Make It Happen
Here’s good news. We offer financing options that make projects more doable for regular folks. You don’t need all the cash sitting in the bank before getting started. A lot of families around Northwest Indiana use financing to get their kitchen done now instead of waiting years to save up. Makes sense to enjoy it while your kids are still at home instead of when they’re grown and gone, right?
No Surprises on Cost
When we give you that free estimate, everything gets broken down clearly. We’re not hitting you with surprise charges halfway through or playing games with hidden fees, that’s just how we do business. Probably comes from that military background, we believe in being straight with people.
Plan for the Unexpected (Just in Case)
When walls get opened up we sometimes find wiring that needs updating or plumbing that should be replaced. Occasionally, there’s things we find that are not up to code anymore that have to get fixed, so having that cushion means you’re not panicking when something unexpected turns up.
4. Choose Quality Materials That Last
Think About Our Weather
Our weather’s brutal on houses. Humid summers, freezing winters, ice, snow, everything. Your kitchen materials have to handle daily beating and our climate. Cheap materials come back to haunt you fast.
Get countertops that can take real life. Hot pans, knives, spills, kids banging stuff around. Quartz and granite both look great and last forever. Quartz never needs sealing which is nice. Granite’s got those natural patterns where every piece is unique. We can talk through what makes sense for how you cook and what you like looking at.
Good cabinets make all the difference in the world! Soft-close hinges and drawer slides aren’t fancy extras: they prevent slamming that damages things over time. Solid construction with proper joinery means your cabinets still look good and work right twenty years down the road (now that’s a good investment). Honestly, just think about how many times daily you open and close doors and drawers, thousands of times yearly. It’s much better if they are built to last!
Floors That Handle Life
Trust us when we say this: Get flooring that won’t get destroyed when you spill something or the kiddos track in snow. Luxury vinyl plank looks just like real wood but it’s waterproof. Porcelain tile is basically bulletproof, and both work great in kitchens.
Don’t cheap out on the range hood either. It’s not just about getting rid of cooking smells. It pulls out moisture and grease that’ll damage your new kitchen if you don’t vent properly. Good ventilation protects your whole investment.
We only use quality stuff we know holds up because we’ve been working in homes around here long enough to see what lasts and what fails. When you hire us, you’re getting that experience. We’re not putting anything in your house we wouldn’t put in our own.
5. Don't Forget the Details
Little Things Add Up
The difference between an okay kitchen and a great one usually comes down to small stuff. Details you appreciate every day without thinking about them.
Put in way more outlets than seems reasonable. Coffee maker, toaster, blender, mixer, phone chargers, tablets, all kinds of stuff needs plugging in. Outlets inside cabinets keep charging stations organized. USB outlets are super convenient. Under-cabinet outlets keep counters cleaner looking. Just think about where you actually use appliances and make sure there’s power nearby.
Those toe-kick drawers under your cabinets are perfect for flat stuff like cookie sheets or placemats. Otherwise that space just sits there wasted.
Pull-out shelves change everything. No more crawling on the floor reaching into the back of cabinets. Everything pulls out where you can see and grab it easy. Corner cabinets especially need these because otherwise they’re black holes where stuff disappears.
Under-cabinet lighting makes seeing what you’re doing so much easier. LED strips don’t use much electricity, last forever, and light up your counters right where you need it.
Organizers, spice rack pull-outs, appliance garages, all that stuff keeps your kitchen from turning into chaos. Worth doing right from the start rather than trying to organize around bad layout later.
When we’re designing with you, we talk through all these details. Where outlets need to go, what storage makes sense for your stuff, everything. We’ve done this enough to spot opportunities you might miss.
6. Work With a Local, Experienced Team
Local Really Matters
Kitchen remodels are big deals. You need people you trust who’ll do right by you.
We know building codes and permit requirements around here inside out. We know what needs happening to keep projects legal and up to code. That local knowledge prevents delays and permit headaches.
We’re not some national chain three states away. We’re right here in Northwest Indiana. You call, we come look at things, we’re available when you need us. That matters during construction.
We’ve worked in all kinds of homes here. Old ranches, bungalows, newer builds, everything. We understand challenges with older construction and how to work with what’s there. Every house is different and we’ve seen most situations.
Our business runs on reputation. We live here too. People being happy with our work and telling friends and neighbors, that’s how we stay busy. We’re not cutting corners because word travels fast in communities like this. We’re invested in doing right because reputation is everything.
Being veteran-owned means something real to us. We run our business with those values. Do what you say. Show up on time. Treat people’s homes with respect. Do quality work. Stand behind it. That’s just how we operate.
We don’t have a template kitchen we do for everybody, that wouldn’t make sense. Every family’s different, every house is different, every budget’s different. We start by really talking with you about what you want and need, and then we design something specifically for your situation. We stay in touch through the whole thing so you always know what’s happening.
